SEK-8 Sculpture
SEK-8 draws inspiration from the artist's surroundings: cattle grazing prairies with wire fences and large walnut and cherry trees. When repairs or changes take place, wires are cut, removed or displaced. A common occurance is the birdnesting of the material.
Edouard Sankowski's collections are elaborated with a strong emphasis on the notion of making use of materials that would usually and otherwise be considered waste and discarded.
In keeping with this process the odd-shaped sculpted stone in the collection, which are central to the designs, is composed of roughs recovered from the field.
He individually selects these roughs (marble or granite blocks and slabs) from French quarries and trusted yards that have been active for over 1000 years. Versailles and the Sacré-Cœur are among esteemed structures that were built thanks to these "Royal Quarries".
